pictures of Green Turtle Cay

Green Turtle Cay is approximately 3 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, however with all the curves and bends the main road takes it is more like 9 miles from the north to the south.

There are about 450 full time residents that live on the Cay year round. Many second home owners call Green Turtle Cay home for part of the year and rent out their houses to tourists while they are away. All the Green Turtle Cay residents are very friendly and will always greet you with a warm smile and friendly wave.

Along with the quiet, relaxing atmosphere offered by this cozy island you would find many conveniences, attractions and some of the most breathtaking beaches in the Abacos. There are three main grocery stores, two hardware stores, seven gift shops, two gourmet restaurants, two resorts, an ice cream shop and bakery, a liquor store and several bars to enjoy a refreshing island drink. Miss Emily’s Blue Bee Bar, located in the town of New Plymouth, is one of the most popular bars in the Abaco’s and is the home of the “Goombay Smash” a sweet fruit punch and rum drink, that certainly lives up to its name!

Take a stroll down the narrow picket fence lined streets in historic New Plymouth. Here you will find their 200-year-old cemetery, the island’s original jail, public basketball court, Albert Lowe Museum, the post office, the government (Administrator’s) office, The Loyalist Sculpture Garden, the government clinic, many old houses and Vert’s Model Ship Shop.

Hop on a golf cart (the island’s main source of transportation) and ride out of town heading to the northern end of the island. Just outside of town is a ball field equipped with new lights, just past that will lead you to Gilliam Bay where you will find the most amazing turquoise colored waters around. It is a shallow beach perfect for kids of all ages and during low tide sand bars appear out of the water and beautiful shells can be collected. The Lowe Art Gallery is the next stop where local Bahamian artist Alton Lowe displays some of his island inspired paintings.

Black Sound, where Leeward Yacht Club is located, is considered one of the safest and most well protected sounds in all of Abaco. Abaco Yacht Services provides a class A shipyard with dry dockage and full size lift for any vessel’s needs.
There is an inner reef that runs along most of the length of the ocean side of the island. Here you can snorkel and explore the reef and shoals just a short swim off shore. If you prefer to go with a professional there are a few fishing and dive guides on the island to take you on a day excursion. Brendal’s Dive Center offers scuba instruction and certification right on the island. There are also several boat rental companies and golf cart rental companies to provide you with any mode of transportation you desire.

Come and see why Green Turtle Cay is considered the “hub of the Abacos”. You will fall in love with the beauty, charm, peace and serenity the island of Green Turtle Cay offers.
